Excursions
From Elounda, the entire East of  Crete reveals itself for exploration.
First of all, there is of course the town and the port of Aghios Nicolaos (8 kms). Boat excursions to the former lepers' island of Spinalonga are on offer at the port several times per day.
The excavation site of Gournia is located some 26 kms south-east by the road to Ierapetra.

The best preserved of all Minoan settlements dates from 1,600 to 1,400 B.C. and presents a network of lanes and stairways as well as a small palace.

Kato Mera, the old town of Ierapetra (42 kms), is of typical Mediterranean flair and has many small shops and workshops where hand-made souvenirs of many kind are on offer.
One should also not miss to have a tour of the town of Sitia on the north coast (77 kms) and it's port.
The promenade that flanks the port was re-designed some years ago, and today ranks as one of Crete's most beautiful ones.

Whenever a ship to Rhodes or other islands leaves from here, the sirens' echos resound from all the mountains which frame the bay of Sitia.
